초신성으로부터 소나타를 만들기 위해선 처음으로 초신성을 관측해야 합니다. 이 소나타의 작곡가(?)인 Alex Parker와 Melissa Graham은 캐나다-프랑스-하와이 망원경(CFHT) 보관소의 데이터에서 초신성을 골라냈죠. 이 자료는 2003년 4월부터 2006년 8월까지의 4 곳의 딥 스카이 사진들이며 이로부터 241개의 타입 Ia 초신성을 찾았습니다. 우주학자들을 매혹시킨 타입 Ia 초신성은 백색왜성이 무너지는 핵융합(thermonuclear) 폭발입니다. 그 후 이 폭발은 초신성에 연주가 가능한 음을 줍니다. 음의 크기는 초신성의 거리에 따라 결정되죠. 희미하고 더 먼 초신성은 더 조용한 음을 냅니다.  각 음의 높이는 얼마나 빨리 초신성이 밝아졌다가 희미해지는지를 정해진 표준 시간간격과 비교한 stretch factor에 따라 정해집니다. 높은 stretch factor의 초신성은 위의 그림 속 프리지아 음계에서  높은 음을 가지게 되죠. 물론 각 초신성의 음은 악기로 연주되었습니다. Explanation: To create a sonata from supernovae, first you have to find the supernovae. To do that composers Alex Parker and Melissa Graham relied on the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) Legacy Survey data of four deep fields on the sky monitored from April 2003 through August 2006, adopting 241 Type Ia supernovae. Enchanting to cosmologists, Type Ia supernovae are thermonuclear explosions that destroy white dwarf stars. Then, they gave each supernova a note to play, the volume of the note determined by the distance to the supernova. Fainter, more distant supernovae play quieter notes. Each note's pitch was based on a stretch factor measured by how fast the supernova brightens and fades over time relative to an adopted standard time history. Higher stretch factors play higher notes in pitches drawn from the illustrated Phrygian dominant scale. Of course, each supernova note is played on an instrument. Supernovae in massive galaxies were assigned to a stand-up bass, while supernovae in less massive galaxies played their note on a grand piano.
